Course Description

Strong classroom communities do not happen by accident. They are intentionally built through meaningful opportunities for students to connect, communicate, participate, and develop a sense of belonging. While icebreakers are often viewed as first-day activities, effective educators understand that they are powerful instructional tools for strengthening classroom climate, increasing student engagement, supporting social-emotional learning, and promoting meaningful participation throughout the school year.

This 10-hour CTLE course provides educators with practical, research-informed strategies for intentionally selecting and implementing icebreakers that support instructional goals, strengthen relationships, encourage collaboration, and create inclusive learning environments. Participants will examine the science of belonging, the importance of emotional safety, and the role classroom community plays in student success while developing practical activities and implementation plans that can be immediately incorporated into classroom instruction.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • The relationship between belonging, engagement, and student success

  • Designing icebreakers that align with instructional goals and student needs

  • Emotional check-in systems that support social-emotional learning

  • Quick icebreakers that strengthen daily classroom connections

  • Content-based icebreakers that reinforce learning

  • Anonymous participation strategies that increase student voice

  • Movement-based activities that improve engagement and focus

  • Team-building activities that strengthen collaboration and communication

  • Equitable participation structures that encourage every student's involvement

  • Developing a yearlong plan for integrating purposeful icebreakers into classroom instruction

Participants will reflect on their current classroom practices while developing practical icebreakers, engagement strategies, and community-building activities that can be implemented immediately in their classrooms. Assignments are designed to be manageable, classroom-focused, and directly connected to real-world instructional practice. Special attention is given to helping educators create welcoming, inclusive, and engaging classroom environments where every student feels connected, valued, and prepared to participate in learning.
