Course Description

Strong family-school partnerships are among the most powerful influences on student success. When educators and families work collaboratively, students experience greater academic achievement, improved attendance, stronger social-emotional development, and increased motivation to learn. Building these partnerships requires intentional communication, mutual trust, cultural responsiveness, and meaningful opportunities for families to participate in their children's education.

This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, research-based strategies for creating and sustaining effective family-school partnerships. Participants will examine the relationship between family engagement and student outcomes, explore Joyce Epstein's Six Types of Parental Involvement framework, strengthen communication practices, develop trust-building strategies with diverse families, and learn how to create comprehensive family engagement plans that foster long-term collaboration. Through reflection, classroom applications, and resource development, educators will leave with practical tools that can be immediately implemented to strengthen relationships between home and school.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • The relationship between family engagement and student success

  • Research supporting meaningful family-school partnerships

  • Joyce Epstein's Six Types of Parental Involvement framework

  • Strategies for creating welcoming and inclusive school environments

  • Effective communication techniques that strengthen home-school connections

  • Building trust with families from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds

  • Using technology to enhance family communication while maintaining accessibility

  • Developing collaborative relationships that support student learning

  • Creating equitable opportunities for family involvement

  • Designing comprehensive family engagement plans aligned with classroom and school goals

Participants will reflect on their current family engagement practices and develop practical communication tools, trust-building strategies, and action plans to strengthen partnerships between families and schools.

Assignments are designed to be manageable, classroom-focused, and directly applicable to everyday educational practice, allowing educators to implement new strategies immediately.

Special attention is given to helping educators build authentic partnerships that recognize families as essential members of the educational team.

Participants will develop practical approaches for fostering inclusive, collaborative relationships that support student achievement, strengthen school communities, and promote positive outcomes for all learners.
