Course Description

Effective communication between educators and families is essential for supporting student learning, building trust, and fostering positive school-home partnerships. As communication increasingly occurs through email, messaging platforms, learning management systems, and virtual meetings, educators must balance professionalism, responsiveness, and accessibility while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Every interaction with families contributes to the relationship between home and school and can significantly influence student success.

This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, evidence-based strategies for communicating confidently and professionally with families in both traditional and digital environments. Participants will explore effective written and verbal communication techniques, develop skills for conducting productive parent-teacher conferences, learn strategies for using digital communication tools appropriately, and practice resolving difficult conversations with empathy, professionalism, and a solution-focused approach. Through reflection, practical application, and resource development, educators will create communication tools that can be implemented immediately within their classrooms and schools.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • The importance of effective family-school communication in supporting student success

  • Building positive and collaborative relationships with families

  • Professional email communication and digital etiquette

  • Best practices for documenting family communication

  • Planning and conducting productive parent-teacher conferences

  • Using digital communication platforms effectively and appropriately

  • Strategies for addressing concerns and resolving difficult conversations

  • Active listening, empathy, and solution-focused communication techniques

  • Creating communication systems that promote consistency, trust, and family engagement

  • Developing practical communication resources that support ongoing collaboration with families

Participants will reflect on their current communication practices while developing professional communication templates, conference planning tools, documentation systems, and digital communication strategies that strengthen relationships with families.

Assignments are designed to be practical, immediately applicable, and directly connected to the daily communication responsibilities of educators.

Special attention is given to helping educators communicate with confidence, professionalism, and empathy while building trusting partnerships with families from diverse backgrounds.
