Course Description

Every classroom includes students with diverse backgrounds, readiness levels, interests, experiences, and learning needs. Effective educators recognize that students do not all learn in the same way or at the same pace. Differentiated instruction provides a proactive framework for designing learning experiences that offer appropriate levels of support and challenge while ensuring that every student has meaningful access to rigorous curriculum and opportunities for success.

This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, evidence-based strategies for implementing differentiated instruction in today's diverse classrooms. Participants will explore learner variability, develop flexible grouping strategies, design tiered assignments, incorporate meaningful student choice, and adapt assessments to increase access while maintaining high expectations. Through reflection, practical applications, and resource development, educators will leave with classroom-ready strategies that promote student engagement, academic achievement, and equitable learning opportunities for all students.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • Understanding learner variability and diverse learning needs

  • Applying differentiated instruction to support all learners

  • Using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to increase accessibility

  • Designing and implementing flexible grouping strategies

  • Creating tiered assignments that maintain rigor while providing appropriate support

  • Incorporating meaningful student choice to increase engagement and ownership

  • Differentiating instruction through content, process, product, and learning environment

  • Adapting assessments to provide equitable opportunities for students to demonstrate learning

  • Using formative assessment to guide instructional decisions

  • Maintaining high expectations while providing appropriate levels of support

  • Developing instructional resources that increase access and participation

  • Creating inclusive classroom environments where all students can succeed

Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing differentiated lesson plans, flexible grouping structures, tiered assignments, student choice activities, and assessment adaptations that can be immediately implemented in their classrooms.

Assignments are designed to be practical, classroom-focused, and directly connected to the daily work of educators serving diverse student populations.

Special attention is given to helping educators design instruction that anticipates learner variability, removes barriers to learning, and promotes equitable access without lowering academic expectations.

Participants will develop practical strategies that strengthen student engagement, encourage independence, improve achievement, and create inclusive learning environments where every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
