Course Description

Technology has become an essential part of teaching, learning, communication, and daily life. As students spend increasing amounts of time interacting with digital tools and online environments, educators play a critical role in helping them develop the knowledge, skills, and habits needed to use technology safely, responsibly, and ethically. This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, evidence-based strategies for teaching digital citizenship and promoting online safety. Participants will explore responsible technology use, cyberbullying prevention, digital footprints, student privacy, and effective family partnerships that reinforce safe digital practices. Through reflection, practical applications, and resource development, educators will leave with classroom-ready strategies that foster responsible digital behavior while preparing students to navigate today's interconnected world with confidence and integrity.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • Principles of responsible and ethical technology use

  • Strategies for teaching digital citizenship across grade levels and content areas

  • Creating practical resources that promote safe, ethical, and responsible participation in digital environments

Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing classroom technology expectations, cyberbullying response plans, digital citizenship lessons, student privacy resources, and family engagement materials that can be immediately implemented in their educational settings.

Assignments are designed to be practical, immediately applicable, and directly connected to the daily responsibilities of educators preparing students for success in an increasingly digital world.
