Course Description
Meaningful classroom discussions do not happen by accident. Just as reading, writing, and problem-solving skills are taught, students must also learn how to communicate effectively, listen actively, share ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and engage in productive conversations. When discussions are intentionally structured, they become powerful instructional tools that increase engagement, strengthen critical thinking, deepen understanding, and amplify student voice.
This 10-hour CTLE course provides educators with practical, research-informed strategies for intentionally teaching discussion skills and creating classroom environments that encourage active participation and meaningful conversation. Participants will explore effective discussion practices, accountable talk strategies, participation structures, psychologically safe learning environments, and instructional techniques that promote equitable participation while supporting diverse learners across educational settings.
Throughout the course, participants will examine:
The role of discussion in promoting engagement, critical thinking, and learning
The characteristics of high-quality classroom discussions
Discussion structures that increase participation and student voice
Accountable talk strategies that deepen thinking and communication
Inclusive discussion practices that promote equitable participation
Creating psychologically safe learning environments that encourage student contribution
Supporting reluctant learners and diverse communication styles during discussions
Developing discussion norms and classroom routines
Building discussion-rich learning environments across a variety of educational settings
Developing implementation plans that sustain meaningful discussion practices
Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing practical discussion structures, participation strategies, and classroom resources that can be implemented immediately in their educational settings. Assignments are designed to be manageable, classroom-focused, and directly connected to real-world instructional practice. Special attention is given to helping educators create classroom environments where every student feels confident, respected, and empowered to contribute through meaningful academic conversations.
