Course Description

Mathematics success requires more than memorizing procedures—it depends on students developing conceptual understanding, reasoning skills, problem-solving abilities, and confidence in their mathematical thinking. Students who struggle with mathematics often benefit from targeted interventions that identify misconceptions, provide explicit instruction, monitor progress, and encourage perseverance through meaningful learning experiences. Effective math intervention focuses on understanding how students think, using data to guide instruction, and providing timely support that helps learners build both competence and confidence.

This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, evidence-based strategies for implementing effective mathematics interventions in K–12 classrooms. Participants will explore mathematical thinking, develop targeted small-group intervention lessons, use progress-monitoring data to inform instructional decisions, address common mathematical misconceptions, and strengthen partnerships with families to support mathematics learning beyond the classroom. Through reflection, practical applications, and resource development, educators will leave with classroom-ready strategies that improve student engagement, mathematical reasoning, and overall achievement.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • Understanding mathematical thinking and reasoning

  • Identifying barriers that contribute to mathematics difficulties

  • Designing effective small-group mathematics interventions

  • Using data to guide instructional decisions and targeted support

  • Implementing progress-monitoring systems that measure student growth

  • Identifying and addressing common mathematical misconceptions

  • Using error analysis to strengthen conceptual understanding

  • Promoting mathematical discourse, perseverance, and productive struggle

  • Building student confidence and fostering positive mathematical mindsets

  • Strengthening family partnerships that support mathematics learning at home

  • Developing intervention resources that can be implemented immediately

  • Creating equitable learning opportunities that improve mathematics achievement for all learners

Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing intervention lessons, progress-monitoring tools, misconception-based instructional activities, and family engagement resources that support mathematics learning.

Assignments are designed to be practical, immediately applicable, and directly connected to the daily work of educators providing mathematics instruction and intervention.

Special attention is given to helping educators identify and respond to students' mathematical thinking through targeted, evidence-based intervention practices.

Participants will develop practical strategies that strengthen conceptual understanding, increase student confidence, improve mathematical achievement, and create supportive learning environments where all students can develop the skills needed for long-term success in mathematics.
