Course Description

Today's classrooms include students with a wide range of abilities, backgrounds, languages, interests, and learning needs. Creating truly inclusive learning environments requires educators to intentionally design instruction that provides equitable access while maintaining high expectations for every learner. Effective inclusion is more than placement—it is the purposeful use of instructional practices that ensure all students can participate meaningfully, demonstrate their learning, and experience success.

This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, evidence-based strategies for supporting diverse learners through inclusive instructional practices. Participants will explore differentiated instruction, distinguish between accommodations and modifications, apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), examine collaborative teaching models, and develop classroom environments that promote belonging, accessibility, and academic achievement. Through reflection, practical applications, and resource development, educators will leave with classroom-ready strategies that can be immediately implemented to support diverse learners across educational settings.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • Principles of differentiated instruction for diverse learners

  • Adapting content, process, product, and learning environments

  • The differences between accommodations and modifications

  • Implementing accommodations that increase access while maintaining high expectations

  • Applying the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework to lesson planning

  • Designing instruction that incorporates multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression

  • Collaborative teaching and co-teaching models that support inclusive education

  • Building effective partnerships among educators to meet student needs

  • Creating classroom environments that foster belonging, accessibility, and participation

  • Culturally responsive practices that support diverse learners

  • Strategies for increasing student engagement and equitable access to learning

  • Developing practical classroom resources that promote inclusive instruction

Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing differentiated lessons, inclusive classroom resources, UDL-based instructional plans, and collaborative teaching strategies that support diverse learners.

Assignments are designed to be practical, immediately applicable, and directly connected to the daily work of educators committed to creating equitable learning environments.

Special attention is given to helping educators create classrooms where every student feels welcomed, respected, supported, and capable of success.

Participants will develop practical strategies that remove barriers to learning, strengthen student engagement, promote meaningful participation, and ensure that all learners have equitable opportunities to achieve academic success.
