Course Description

Effective classroom management is about more than responding to challenging behaviors—it is about intentionally creating an environment where positive behaviors are taught, reinforced, and expected. When classrooms are built upon clear expectations, consistent routines, positive relationships, and mutual respect, students are more likely to remain engaged, demonstrate appropriate behavior, and achieve academic success.

This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, evidence-based strategies for developing proactive classroom management systems that support both student learning and positive classroom culture. Participants will examine how expectations, routines, positive behavior supports, relationship-building, and effective responses to challenging behavior contribute to successful learning environments. Through reflection and practical application, educators will develop strategies that reduce disruptions, increase student engagement, and promote self-regulation while maintaining respectful and supportive classroom communities.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • The foundations of effective classroom management

  • Establishing clear expectations and classroom routines

  • Building positive teacher-student relationships

  • Creating a positive classroom climate that supports learning

  • Proactive strategies that prevent challenging behaviors

  • Positive behavior supports and reinforcement systems

  • Responding effectively to challenging behaviors

  • De-escalation techniques that maintain student dignity

  • Teaching student responsibility and self-regulation

  • Creating consistent classroom procedures that maximize instructional time

  • Reflecting on current classroom management practices

  • Developing a personalized classroom management plan for immediate implementation

Participants will reflect on their current classroom management practices while developing practical strategies, routines, behavior supports, and management systems that promote student engagement and positive behavior.

Assignments are designed to be practical, immediately applicable, and directly connected to the daily experiences of classroom educators.

Special attention is given to helping educators create supportive, well-structured classrooms where positive relationships, consistency, and proactive teaching reduce behavioral challenges before they occur.

Participants will develop management practices that foster student responsibility, strengthen classroom communities, and maximize opportunities for academic and social-emotional success.
