Course Description
Student mental health is an essential component of academic success, school engagement, and overall well-being. Educators are often among the first adults to recognize when students may be experiencing emotional, behavioral, or mental health challenges. Although teachers are not mental health professionals, they play a vital role in identifying concerns, fostering supportive classroom environments, implementing preventative practices, and connecting students with appropriate school-based resources. By developing a deeper understanding of student mental health, educators can create classrooms where students feel safe, valued, and supported.
This 5-hour professional development course provides educators with practical, evidence-based strategies for recognizing student mental health concerns, building supportive learning environments, understanding referral procedures, teaching healthy stress-management techniques, and collaborating effectively with families and school support personnel. Participants will explore proactive approaches that promote resilience, emotional well-being, and academic success while maintaining professional responsibilities and ethical boundaries. Through reflection, practical applications, and resource development, educators will leave with classroom-ready strategies that strengthen student support systems and foster positive school climates.
Throughout the course, participants will examine:
Recognizing early warning signs of student mental health concerns
Understanding the educator's role in supporting student well-being
Creating classroom environments that promote emotional safety and belonging
Building positive relationships that foster trust and resilience
Understanding appropriate referral procedures and school support systems
Documenting observations objectively while maintaining student confidentiality
Teaching healthy stress-management and coping strategies
Promoting emotional regulation and resilience through everyday classroom practices
Collaborating effectively with families and school-based support professionals
Maintaining professional boundaries while supporting students experiencing challenges
Developing classroom-ready mental health resources and support plans
Creating learning environments that promote student well-being, engagement, and academic success
Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing student observation tools, classroom wellness plans, referral process guides, stress-management resources, and family collaboration plans that can be immediately implemented within their educational settings.
Assignments are designed to be practical, classroom-focused, and directly connected to the daily responsibilities of educators supporting student mental health and well-being.
Special attention is given to helping educators recognize concerns early, respond appropriately, and create supportive classroom environments that promote resilience, emotional wellness, and student success.
Participants will develop practical strategies that strengthen school-family partnerships, support positive mental health, encourage healthy coping skills, and contribute to safe, inclusive learning environments where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
