Course Description

One-to-one instruction presents unique opportunities and challenges for educators, teaching assistants, interventionists, tutors, and home instruction teachers. Individualized learning environments allow educators to personalize instruction, address skill gaps, build meaningful relationships, and accelerate student growth. At the same time, successful one-to-one instruction requires intentional planning to maintain engagement, differentiate instruction, encourage independence, and prevent students from becoming overly reliant on adult support.

This 10-hour CTLE course provides educators with practical, research-informed strategies for delivering effective individualized instruction across a variety of educational settings. Participants will explore relationship-building techniques, engagement strategies, differentiation, scaffolding methods, targeted interventions, executive functioning supports, confidence-building practices, and instructional approaches that promote student independence while meeting individual learning needs.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • The foundations of effective one-to-one instruction

  • Building positive relationships that support learning

  • Differentiating instruction based on individual student needs

  • Engagement strategies for individualized learning environments

  • Scaffolding techniques that promote student independence

  • Delivering effective mini-lessons and targeted interventions

  • Supporting executive functioning and organizational skills

  • Building student confidence and self-efficacy

  • Preventing learned helplessness and overdependence on adult support

  • Developing individualized support plans that foster long-term student success

Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing practical teaching strategies, intervention supports, and individualized learning plans that can be immediately implemented in home instruction, tutoring, intervention programs, and other one-to-one educational settings. Assignments are designed to be manageable, practice-focused, and directly connected to real-world individualized instruction. Special attention is given to helping educators create supportive one-to-one learning environments that foster student confidence, independence, engagement, and long-term academic success.
