Course Description

Every student enters the classroom carrying experiences that influence how they learn, behave, interact, and engage with others. Some of these experiences are visible, while many remain hidden beneath the surface. Students may carry adversity, trauma, caregiving responsibilities, anxiety, family instability, or other life experiences that affect their ability to participate, regulate emotions, build relationships, and experience success in school. While educators may not always know what students are carrying, recognizing these hidden challenges can transform how they respond to students' needs.

This 15-hour CTLE course provides educators with practical, research-informed strategies for understanding the unseen experiences that influence student behavior, learning, and engagement. Participants will explore how adversity, trauma, hidden responsibilities, belonging, resilience, emotional regulation, and mindset affect student success while learning relationship-centered practices that maintain high expectations and foster accountability. Throughout the course, educators will examine evidence-based strategies for building supportive relationships, promoting resilience, responding to dysregulation, and creating classroom environments where every student feels seen, valued, and capable of success.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • The concept of the Invisible Backpack and its impact on student learning

  • How adversity and trauma influence behavior, engagement, and academic performance

  • The effects of caregiving responsibilities, family instability, and hidden stressors

  • Building relationships that strengthen trust and belonging

  • Supporting emotional regulation and responding to student dysregulation

  • Strengthening resilience through protective factors and supportive classroom practices

  • Maintaining high expectations while providing meaningful support

  • Creating inclusive classroom environments that promote student connection

  • Recognizing student strengths through asset-based instructional practices

  • Developing classroom action plans that support the whole child and promote long-term student success

Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing practical relationship-building strategies, classroom supports, and intervention plans that can be implemented immediately in their educational settings. Assignments are designed to be manageable, practice-focused, and directly connected to real-world classroom instruction. Special attention is given to helping educators recognize the unseen challenges students carry while creating safe, supportive, and relationship-centered learning environments where every student feels connected, respected, and empowered to succeed.
