Course Description

Every classroom is filled with students whose lives extend far beyond what educators observe during the school day. While some challenges are immediately visible, many remain hidden beneath the surface. Students may quietly carry responsibilities, experiences, and circumstances that influence how they learn, behave, participate, build relationships, and engage with school. These unseen experiences often shape academic performance, emotional well-being, and behavior in ways that educators may not immediately recognize.

This 15-hour CTLE course provides educators with practical, research-informed strategies for recognizing the hidden experiences that influence student success through a whole-child, strengths-based approach. Participants will explore emotional struggles, caregiving responsibilities, invisible disabilities, poverty, food insecurity, housing instability, grief, chronic illness, executive functioning challenges, belonging, resilience, and the lasting influence of trusted adult relationships. Throughout the course, educators will examine evidence-based practices for building meaningful relationships, fostering emotionally safe learning environments, responding to students with curiosity rather than assumption, and creating classrooms where every student feels seen, valued, respected, and capable of success.

Throughout the course, participants will examine:

  • The hidden experiences that influence student learning, behavior, and engagement

  • Emotional well-being and its impact on academic success

  • Caregiving responsibilities, family circumstances, and unseen student stressors

  • Invisible disabilities and executive functioning challenges

  • Poverty, food insecurity, housing instability, and barriers to learning

  • Grief, chronic illness, and other life experiences that affect student success

  • The role of belonging, trust, and meaningful relationships in student engagement

  • Strength-based practices that build resilience and hope

  • Creating emotionally safe and inclusive learning environments

  • Developing classroom action plans that recognize the whole child while promoting long-term student success

Participants will reflect on their current instructional practices while developing practical relationship-building strategies, classroom supports, and intervention plans that can be implemented immediately in their educational settings. Assignments are designed to be manageable, practice-focused, and directly connected to real-world classroom instruction. Special attention is given to helping educators recognize the unseen experiences that shape student success while creating classrooms built on trust, belonging, hope, high expectations, and meaningful relationships.
